June 30th

Dear Readers,

Today was another fantastic day, and thank GOODNESS! I did not make my quota yesterday, or the day before, so I was a little stressed out today. BUT, I DID IT!! I made over 300.00 for the HRC today. :0)

The only story that really stuck out in my mind, (and I told her, she would get blogged about tonight) was a lady who moved from the US, to England! She wanted to give so very much. Therefore, she gave me 50$ cash on the spot and had done with it. We talked about how this country can seem so silly sometimes. Even though, I like it here...

That is about it really. Another good day. Nothing too exciting to report.

Keep reading kids!

-Love to you all

BACK!

Hello there to my loyal 7 followers!

WELL, do I have some stories for you.
Agenda:
1) PRIDE

-Went wonderful! I made 800$ for HRC. I met the most amazing people and had a fantastic time.
One of my favorite things that happened to me all day, was when I met the two gentleman couple who had shirts on of their wedding rings, and hands. It gave the date in which they got engaged. I stopped them, and they both told me they were already members. However, in talking to me they told me that they wanted to give me an extra special pride one time donation. I began asking them about their shirts, and they told me they hadn't gotten married yet. HOWEVER, NOW that marriage is legal in NYC they want to move there, get married and start a family. Is that not wonderful?

I also met a transgender woman. She gave me lots of hugs, and told me that the work I was doing, was fantastic! She was excited about her new drivers license and showed it to me. :0) She was a truck driver for years and years, and was in the military. Commanding officer. I did not feel it right to go into too much detail in asking lots of questions about herself, but I kept bumping into her at the festival, and would get hugs all over.
These are the kinds of things that make me keep wanting to do this job.

All in all, pride was amazing.

BEFORE PRIDE:
Two people from a bigger office, direct workers of HRC came in and told us a story.
A lesbian couple was on vacation with their two kids, in Florida. They were out having a great time on a boat, when one of the mothers suffered a brain aneurism. She was rushed to the hospital in Florida. Despite having all the necessary paper work, her partner was refused access to see her. She was told to her face, "You are in an Anti Gay town, in an Anti Gay state."
You think this is really sad right? It only gets better from here:
Her wife died. Alone. In a hospital in Florida. The best part? They could not take this case to court, because their is no law that states otherwise.
This bill is SO important. These are real people with real stories. This is why, if you see one of the HRC canvassers, STOP and listen.
The days following pride have been great too.

TODAY
I was made a Field Manager today! I guess this is a good thing. It must mean that they like what they see in me. I am striving to be a great canvasser. I want to make a Chicago Hot night one day. That is 700$. That would be SO amazing for HRC!

Today was difficult. Their was a lot of hate on the street. I felt so bad for one of my crew members today. A woman, who was walking away from her, turned around after hearing her greeting of "Hey sir, do you have one minute for gay rights?" This woman was SHOCKED at what she heard..."GET OFF the STREET RIGHT NOW young LADY!"
It was like she couldn't believe her ears. As though, this is some new concept or something.
We also had a little trouble with some hobo's taunting us. A milk crate kind of got waved and almost thrown at this poor girl.

GOOD things:
foot note: I ran into my good friend Robbie! He walked passed me. It was great to see him. I got a nice hug from him. :0)
I got to meet an ER doc from New Zeland that gave me 40$. He moved from Chicago to there, and told me I should move there. I just might. It sounded pretty nice out there. Beautiful weather, nice people and nice jobs. Why not? Maybe I could work for HRC in New Zeland! OR: Maybe My Music will take off, and I can do a tour over there!!!

The BEST meeting was a board or counsel member ( cant remember his title) OF HRC! Basically, he is kind of a big Cheese and works for HRC. We had lots in common. For example, he is Episcopal, like me. He also works at the same church that I was baptized at. He sent me an email directly from his Iphone, which I responded, just before posting this blog.

Hopefully, ill have some updates about the status of this bill. Up until now, I hated politics. I still hate politics, but now I am much more educated about things, and this is something that is so important. I CANT STRESS how much I care about this, and how much passion I have for these people and stories and lives.
Again, that is why I started this blog. I think that their are so much more stories out there, if only we could all have a place to share our stories!
Well dear, and darling followers. It is now about 10:37. I have another LONG and FUN day of canvassing ahead of me. I love the work that I do, and all of you for reading. Reading means caring. That is all we need in this world, is more people to GIVE A SHIT, and just take a little time to do something nice.

SO, to all of the wonderful and nice people who made me smile today while I was out there. Thank you. It is the people like you, that give me the fuel to keep doing what I do.

GO HRC and GO EDNA BILL!!
Love,
Gracie Lou

Yesterday...

Hello readers!

Today's post is going to be a little bit short. I try to post at night, before bed. However, I have been SO tired lately, that I have been a little slackish...(Rock-star grammar reader, I know that this is not a word.) In any case, yesterday I did not make as much money as I would have liked. I was in a great spot though! We were outside of a jamba-Juice with a HUGE pride flag in the window. I stared, longingly in the window wishing somebody would buy me a juice. The manager waved me in, but I made the "money" signal at him, as if to say "Dude, I would, but I really don't have the dough." He signaled back, saying "I'll cut it in HALF" I was like, "DONE!" I told my field manager I would be right back. When I entered the store, the manager said "I can see that you are out there, working hard, in the rain. What would you like?" I hadn't been in one of those, in a really long time, so he walked me through creating the most DELICIOUS drink. AND he was nice. He gave me the largest size, for only 3$!! Have any of you SEEN those things? They are HUGE! I thanked him over and over, and said "It's people like you!..." He replied, "NO, it's people like YOU!"

This gave me a little spring in my step, which gave me the energy to keep on going for the day, since I hadn't made quota yet. It was down to the last five minutes, when I stopped a lady. I gave her my rap, and she was already pulling out her wallet. "What do  I do?" with a smile,  I pulled out the form. She gave me 10$/month! This put me at about 180$ for the day. NOT as much, as I would have liked to make for HRC, but it is a hell of a lot better than 90$, which is what I was at before.

ALSO, Today, June 24th, I heard about Obama giving a speech to the GLBT community. He was talking about wanting the law to change, in order to recognize same sex couples, in the same way as every body else. Tax wise, marriage wise, and laws in general! If the BIG man is with us, then we KNOW we can win this fight!

KEEP Praying, meditating, wishing, hopping...whatever it is that you do...DO THAT.
I will still be canvassing pride this weekend, on saturday, sooo EVERYbody send me good wishes of dollar signs, energy, and all that. I strongly believe in this cause. There is a lot more to this than just voting, and getting money. People are really going to have to learn to altar their way of thinking things. We all must be willing to accept change. ALL of us!

Thanks for reading! Feel free to leave comments, and I will figure out some way of posting them. If you wish me to post your comments, please indicate so.
Love to you all,

NOW for me to be off to work.

PRIDE

Well,

Yesterday, I got to canvass in BOYS TOWN. It was amazing. I had an awesome day, and met at least one person who stuck out in my mind. His name was Richard. He told me that he came out, in Nebraska in 1966! What  a hard state to come out in, right? At any rate, he told me about all the different marches that he has done also. He marched in  Washington, for one of the first AIDS march. He was in the front row, and was one of the first GAY deligates during the Clinton Administration. We had a wonderful time chatting away. I made over quota, and they told me that I should canvass at PRIDE. I agreed, with hesitation. I have never been to pride before, and I made NO money at Andersonville, therefore I was a little afraid to canvass Pride. However, since I have been doing a LOT better, I am sure that this will be fun, and ill make lost of money.

The Bill! So, we have made lots of progress, but the fight is still not over. I found an article, however, that shows people are starting to sway. Check out this link! http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2011/06/nj-lawmaker-voting-against-marriage-equality-biggest-mistake-of-my-career/

Other than that folks, I have no current updates! Thanks for reading!!! Time for work. I'll see you all at PRIDE!!!

Wednesday June, 22nd, morning

Hello again!
I DID IT! Yesterday, I achieved my goal of a "HOT NIGHT!" I made over $500.00 for the HRC, with a few stories along the way. My favorite was an old lady. She walked up to me, as I was wearing my shirt that said "Legalize Gay". I said, "hi there! Do you have one minute for Gay Rights?" and she had this weird accent..."I tought we had all thee rights in da worldt? Amareecaa.." and I said, "Well, kind of..." and she replied "Vhat to you mean by dis?" I said, "Well, for example, it is still legal in 29 states to fire somebody for being gay.." "PHSSSFFHHHSSS...(spitting sound...) who cares?" And she walked away. I literally got spit, on my face. I wiped my face, and laughed as she walked away. It is these people, that make me laugh, because I always wonder how their worlds can be so small?!?  HA!

The other awesome thing that happened was that my wonderful, beloved grandmother came, and saw me. (Well, officially, we "bumped into one another on the street") and she became a 10.00$ per month member! Which, helped me out a lot! Thanks Nanny. I love you!

After that, I had a lady practically walk up to me, and just say "YES, I want to give to you guys." As she and I were speaking, a dude in REALLY baggy shorts, long ass shirt and this weird hat walked by. He was yelling at me, and obviously could not tell that I was in the middle of a conversation, said "yo, you guys legalizing weed? I wana leagalize some weed man!" He was stoned.  .  . "umm...no, but I'm talking to somebody right now.." The lady I was chatting with, said "Excuse me..you're being rude!" As he walked away, we both laughed.
A good day, all in all. I am hopping I get more followers on this blog. Also, I would like to put facts, and news updates if I can. Once I find out where to look to get quick, and accurate information, I will be sure to post those as well.

Thank you all for keeping up with me, my 5 followers! Love to you all, and keep sending me well wishes, vibes, energy, comments and all that,  so I can keep this up. I believe so strongly in this organization and the passion for this is growing and growing with each passing day!

Happy Father's Day!

Hello my loyal followers!
Today is Father's day, and another day of work for me. However, I will not be on the street today. I shall be at Potbelly's sandwich shoppe, singing away. (that is...if my VOICE follows through...) Canvassing, takes a toll on one's singing voice...but, this voice thing has been a problem for awhile now. However, a girl that I work with has a EMT office that was started by her grandfather. Next week is the phone call and the appointment.

In other news, PRIDE is next weekend! HRC will be hanging around there, and you should too!! I have never been to pride, so I am really looking forward to it.

That is all for now folks. Happy Fathers day Daddy! Spend time with your dads everybody. I am sure I'll have lots of stories when I return tonight.

saturday, June 18th

Well,
I DID it! today I raised about 431.00$. They put me on Michigan Ave, in front of the hotel. I got to say hello to the people walking in and out. It was super busy. My favorite contributer was a girl from Ohio. She said that she was super in favor of the issue, and she became a 20$ subscriber. We talked for a while, about how her sister is gay and she was in shock that it is still legal in 29 states to fire somebody for being gay. Despite having a wedding, (her own) in just a few months, and was in Chicago trying to find her dress. She liked it so much, that she took her picture with me on her cell phone and posted it to her facebook page!

My other favorite stop today was a woman who said she was already a giver. However, she had her ten year old son with her. She asked me to tell him what we did. So, I gave him the rap, explaining that I was a Canvasser for HRC, and we were trying to get this bill passed, that would make employment discrimination illegal in all of our states. After I was finished, she turned to her son and said, "So, do you know why we are doing this?" He looked up at his mom and said, "For uncle Sam?" I replied, "YES! Living in America means that everybody should be able to work, and not be fired for the people that they love!" The woman smiled at me, and so did the boy. "Well," said the boy, "I actually do have an uncle Sam." "Oh!" I laughed. Yet, we are doing this for our uncle Sam. Work, for Work!
I got a lot of people involved today! When I returned back to the office, and they debrifed me, they asked me what they thought was different and I said "I think it was the location"
"Wrong answer. We will never put you in a location where we don't think you can make money." It seems that this Canvass thing is a skill that I can't quite get my brain around. Oh well... hopefully soon, with time, may come consistency. Now, I am sitting here, after a really long, hard day and watching "Young Frankenstine". I must rest, for tomorrow is another day of work.
This is work of a different kind. I shall be singing at the Chicago and Rush Potbelly's. I hope this post reaches lots of people~
Thank you all, fellow readers.

Friday, June 17th 2011

Today I decided to start a Blog, about my new job as a canvasser for HRC. For those of you who do not know, HRC, stands for Human Rights Campaign. We are the nations largest Gay and Lesbian Civil rights group. I love my job. I am fighting for something that I am so passionate about. Equal rights for all. For those of you who do not know what a "Canvasser" is...my job is to stand on a street corner, smile, get peoples attention and say "Hi there! do you have one minute for gay civil rights?" If they stop, I get to say "Great! My name is Grace. I'm with the Human Rights Campaign, we are the nations largest Gay and Lesbian Civil rights group, and we are out here today signing up members, so I'm really glad you stopped!" Then I hand them my binder and say, " Here, check this out!...we are continuing our fight against discrimination. We have made a lot of progress towards equality, but unfortunately, it is still legal in 29 states, to fire somebody, just for being gay!" (I then love watching their eyes widen at such a statement.) Then, I tell them what we are doing..."This year, we are working to pass a bill in congress that would end this type of workplace discrimination, on a federal level. Unfortunately, we are being fought against by the religious right, like Christian Coelition and Focus on the Family. Which is why we need a lot of public support, and that's why we are out here today." (This is the part, that I look at them and I can tell they are thinking "Oh SHIT i KNEW they were gona ask me for my money). It gets better, because I then say "The best way that you can support us today, is by becoming an HRC partner..." This is the other part that I love, because they are REALLY thinking, "SHIT. I REALLY dont wana give this girl money...") "whats that?" they ask. I tell them, "HRC partners make small monthly contributions, with either a credit card or checking account. This is the BEST way to give, because it gives us the sustained Grassroots suport that we need, that will help us get this bill past, and its really easy to sign up, right here!" I then, look at them, nod, and smile and wait for them to say no. This thing that I say, I say to everybody, because they teach us to say it. It is called the "Rap". It does usually work, and you can get people to give to you...if you are well skilled at it.

They put me with one of the best canvassers in the entire country. He sees a grand potential in me to be a good or, great, canvasser. I hope he is right.

Today, I made no money. However, I had one of the best days ever. I ran into an older man."My name is Grace." I said, " Dale. pleasure to meet you, cutie pie!" he replied. He was grey, and covered in tatoos. After I gave him my rap, he told me that he really wanted to get involved. "My wife and I are on social security and we really can't give anything." I told him that I was sorry for that. This is an extreamely urgent campaign, and we need as much support as we can get. However, I knew he wasnt going to be able to give. He could see my frustration with the heat, and the day. He told me to keep my head up! I watched him walk away, with a dollar sign floating over his head... a little while later he returned with a rose. "Don't let the day get ya!" he said. I smiled, and accepted the gift.

I also met a man named Johnny. He told me that he was being fired from his job, not for being gay, but for a learning dissability that he had. he wondered if our office would have been able to help him. I told him that I didnt know. It turns out that he is a wonderful piano player, and he plays "by ear, and by heart".  I loved it. He had polio when he was a child in Italy. He wanted my number, but I dont give my number out to random strangers with polio that I meet in the street.

Roses. Music. Beer after work with friends. Although I did not make any money, I still had a great day. I will BANK tomorrow.

NOW. No more thinking about work.

I hope this blog gets followers.
